Would you like to understand why you age? Why do some people look older or younger than they really are? What is your skin care philosophy? It is critical to understand, because then you know how to fight it. Your skin care philosophy will be based on knowledge, not just the latest marketing hype.
You may have heard or read the following statement on the basic cause of aging...
"The most significant cause of aging is by free radical damage on the cellular level."
Exactly what does this statement mean to you personally and in your daily life? Let's break it down in a very simple and understandable way. Then you can have a skin care philosophy which makes a real difference in your appearance. Let's start here...
Your body is made up of cells. Your cells are made of atoms. The atoms have a nucleus in the center. The nucleus has electrons orbiting around it. Just like satellites orbit around the earth.
By sharing electrons, two or more atoms can form together. That structure is called a molecule. Now that you have some basic information about your body, let's see...
Free radicals are unstable molecules which have lost an electron. These free radicals want to grab an electron from a molecule in your cells. If the free radical succeeds, it will cause damage to your cell. Which, in turn, causes your body to age.
Now your body produces free radicals quite normally from your breathing and energy production from the food you eat. So at that level, they are necessary for you to function.
However, our environment also produces free radicals from chemicals, pollution, radiation from the sun, smoke, etc. This constant bombardment to your body will eventually overwhelm your immune system, which protects you from free radicals.
Then the aging process not only causes wrinkles, it also causes cancer, diabetes, heart disease, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, and many other degenerative diseases associated with aging.
These degenerative diseases not only make you look older than you are, but they also make you feel much older. Your quality of life decreases significantly and your life span is shortened. But it does not have to be that way, if you have the proper anti-aging skin care and body care.
The free radical concept of aging came from the work of Dr. Denham Harman in 1954. He was studying the effects of radiation on human biology and was trying to come up with a way to treat radiation poisoning that would result from a nuclear war. During this time in history the United States was in the Cold War with the Soviet Union, and there was a great fear of the possibility of nuclear war.
The reason radiation is dangerous is because it produces the hydroxyl free radical, which is very powerful and destructive. Dr. Harman noticed the similarities between mild radiation poisoning and premature aging. He developed the concept that in aging, free radicals produced the same effects, but it just took place over a long period of time. And that is...
Aging is so slow and gradual, and degenerative diseases develop so slowly that they are just accepted as a part of growing old. Over 70 percent of Americans will die prematurely from degenerative diseases. But it doesn't have to be that way for you.
Well, you might say, "my genes are not so good because this problem runs in my family". This is a common statement, but false, because...
Can you really blame your so-called age-related problems on your genes? The correct answer is no. The reason why?...
Antioxidants have the ability to switch genes on and off. If an antioxidant detects a problem, it will either turn off or turn on the appropriate genes. Which, in turn, tell your cells to live, die, reproduce, or take nutrients.
Isn't this really good news? Absolutely! You do not have to be a victim of your genetic heritage.
Now let's take a look at
antioxidants. Let's see where they fit into an anti-aging skin care and body care program.
As a baby boomer, I am very excited about the latest information on anti-aging facial skin care and anti-aging body care. I have been interested in a natural approach to healthy living for over 30 years.
